Heres our box office report for the weekend of December 9th, 2011- featuring the performances of new releases New Year&8217;s Eve and &8216;The Sitter as well as updates on the rest of the box office top ten.

At Thanksgiving it looked like box office numbers were moving in an upward trajectory, but now that the dust has settled, it appears that the numbers are continuing to disappoint

Top of the heap this week isNew Years Eve, director Gary Marshalls followup to his 2009 hit,?Valentines Day. However,New Years Eveonly banked $13.7 million over the weekend, a r cry from the $56 million that its predecessor scored when it debuted.Valentines Daywas a front-loaded release, smartly positioned to debut strong over the Valentine&8217;s day weekend.?It could be argued that?V Day?had a better line-up of stars, with the likes of Julia Roberts, Jessica Alba, Bradley Cooper, Anne Hathaway, Jamie Fox and Jennifer Garner. Meanwhile,New Years Evefeatures Robert DeNiro, Zac Efron, Michelle Pfeiffer, Halle Berry, Sarah Jessica Parker and Jon Bon Jovi (take that as you will). It should be noted that Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Biel and Hector Elizondo appear in both movies.

Going forward,?New Years Eveshould have better legs thanValentines Day, as itll play through the Holiday season and into the New Year &8211; however, it won&8217;t crack $100 million.

Jonah HillsThe Sitter(read our review) iled to attract an audience. The film scored an estimated $10 million over the weekend, taking second place not a good number, especially in a year when R-rated comedies have been so successful.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn-Part 1dropped to three after grossing an additional $7.9 million. The vampire franchise movie has now brought in almost $260 million and over $600 million globally.

The Muppetsbrought in another $7 million, and upped their cume to a smidgen under $66 million. This number makes it the highest grossing Muppet movie, overtaking 1979sThe Muppet Movie$65.2 million, but this latest instalment in the franchise is lagging in attendance.

Arthur Christmasshould see Monday morning with another $6.6 million in the kitty, for a $33 million total. The Christmas film has another two weeks to score as much cash as possible before it arrives on DVD next year.

Hugoscored an extra $6 millioJessica Alban over the weekend. The mily has now grossed just over $33 million not a good number considering that its production budget was $150 million.

George ClooneysThe Descendantsbanked another $4.8 million on limited release. The Oscar-tipped film has now grossed $23.6 million, and more green is guaranteed as it expands.

Animated bombHappy Feet 2waddled away with another $3.6 million, upping its total to a flaccid $56.8 million.

Jack & Jillgrossed $3.2 million and upped its cume to $68 million, a solid number, but more is expected from Adam Sandler at the box office even if the product is substandard.

Immortalsbrought in a little over $2.4 million, giving the action film a total of just under $80 million. The $70 million film is now closing in on $200 million worldwide.

Tower Heistdropped out of the top ten. The comedy caper banked $2.4 million for a $74 million, an okay number, but a disappointment considering the star power of Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy and&8230;er&8230;Matthew Broderick.

That&8217;s it for now. See you at the movies.

3 weeks agoMaybe they need to release a movie or two a bit more before Christmas. MI-GP and SH-2 should be out by now!

3 weeks agoFrom the cast alone, New Years Eve looked like it would make a billion dollars. Now it will probably end up like The Big Year.

3 weeks agoNext up on the Garry Marshall-Ashton Kutcher Holiday Saga: Father&8217;s Day, featuring every single actor in Hollywood plus a couple more.

3 weeks agoHaha, and it will make even less money, resulting in a r worse average per &8220;star.&8221;

They should make such a movie for Arbor Day.

I would say they should make one for Groundhog&8217;s Day, but&8230;
